What is the ISO 45001:2023 standard?
The standard specifies the requirements for an occupational health and safety (OHS) management system and provides guidance for its use, enabling organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injuries and illnesses, and by proactively improving OHS performance. The standard is applicable to any organization wishing to establish, implement, and maintain an OHS management system to improve health and safety at work, eliminate hazards, and minimize OHS-related risks. It applies to all organizations regardless of size, type, or activity. It is relevant to OHS risks that the organization can control, considering factors such as the context in which the organization operates and the needs and expectations of its workers and other interested parties. The standard does not set specific OHS performance criteria nor prescribe how to design an OHS management system. It does not address issues such as product safety, property damage, or environmental impacts not related to workers or other relevant interested parties. The standard can be used in whole or in part to systematically improve occupational health and safety management. However, statements of conformity to this standard are only acceptable if all its requirements are incorporated into the organization’s OHS management system and are met without exclusions.
What is a management system and why do we need one?
The international standard ISO 9000:2015 defines a management system as a set of interrelated or interacting elements of an organization to establish policies, objectives, and processes to achieve those objectives. A complete management system covers every aspect of management and focuses on supporting performance management to meet objectives. The management system should be subject to continual improvement as the organization evolves.
